HOW TO REPLACE GARAGE DOOR EXTENSION SPRINGS

Over 1000 times per year, our garage door opens or closes. The garage door's moving parts are subjected to wear and tear.

The spring could have traveled through the room and landed in mine like an exploding missile. Fortunately, the safety cord was correctly installed.

This guide from WeFixit will show you how to identify and repair a damaged extension spring.

It doesn't matter if you are not assigned the task, but it is important to know when your springs may be in danger.

SAFETY FIRST AND FOREMOST

Garage doors have very tight extension springs.

Security should be a top priority.
It's easy to keep your garage contents secure.
It is important to ensure that your car does not stay in a garage.
It can be parked on the street or in your driveway.
Next, open the garage door.
Position your step ladder below the doorway.

Make certain the ladder is at your door's top.
Remove the garage door opener from the circuit.
It is not a good idea for someone to close the door while you are working on it. !
You can pull down the manual safety release on your garage door. The door will now open and close quickly.
Double-check that the garage door's base is on the ladder.
Position your C-clamps on both the left and right sides of the garage doors tracks.
C-clamps should be placed underneath the track's final roll.

A BAD GARAGE DOOR EXTENSION MUST BE REMOVED

It's simple to spot a broken garage door extension spring.
When the spring is stretched, coils can become uneven and distended. It is necessary to replace it.
Spring is a horrible extension.
The garage door can be viewed when it is closed.
To attach extension springs to each other, a pulley and an I-bolt are used.
A vertical bracket holds the I-bolt in place.
An extension spring should be accompanied by a safety cable made of steel that runs through it. It is connected to the vertical bracket.
To change the spring, take out the safety cord and pulley.
Use your wrenches to loosen the bolt holding down the pulley.

Connect the steel cable to your pulley.
Although it may sound strange, the pulley wheel interacts uniquely with the cable that it pulls.
Attach the cable to the pulley, and use the extension spring to connect it.
It might be helpful to take a photograph of the safety cable that is attached to the vertical bracket.
Once you have taken out the cable, you can reconnect it.

Now remove the pulley at the end to let go of the old extension spring.

HOW TO SELECT A NEW EXTENSION SPRING AND INSTALL IT

Garage doors can be fitted with color-coded extension springs.

In 5 minutes, you can visit the hardware store to get replacement springs.

It is important to replace both springs at once because one spring has greater tension and the garage door will not close properly.
Attach the safety cable clip at the end of the extension spring.
Thread the safety cable through the spring. Attach the safety cord to the bracket
Refer to the photo for instructions on how to attach your cable.
Secure the cable using your lineman's tools
Insert the pulley wheel into the safety cable clip and tighten the bolts with your wrenches.
To loosen the steel cable that runs over the bracket, take out the S-hook.
Make certain the safety cord is not tangled here.
